1- SuScit Research update:

 

a-SuScit Third Shared Workshop: 1st July: Developing a Community Led Research Agenda for Urban Sustainability:

 

On the 1st July the residents, researchers, practitioners and the SuScit team will be attending the last SuScit shared workshop at the Bansbury Complex in Islington.

The event will be an opportunity to the SuScit project participants to take further the discussions around sustainability issues held up to now in other workshops and activities; developing a community lead research agenda.

The residents will watch films and be informed about the Researchers’ and Practitioners’ previous workshops.

The event will also be enriched by the delivery of presentations of the researchers and practitioners project ideas, based on the resident’s previous discussions and insights.

The day will end up with a celebration of a highly successful engagement between residents, researchers and practitioners.

a- Policy Studies Institute: How hydrogen can meet UK energy goals:

 

An innovative modelling research project undertaken by PSI researchers, presents new insights on how hydrogen can contribute to the UK meet its energy policy goals and its wider impacts. As part of the Department for Transport Horizons Research Programme, the project, State-of-the-art Modelling of Hydrogen Infrastructure Development for the UK, furthers our understanding of the technical achievability, potentials, costs, and contribution to UK energy policy goals of the evolution of a hydrogen infrastructure.

b- EPSRC: SUE project: Inclusive and Sustainable Infrastructure for Tourism and Urban Regeneration (INSITU): Scoping Study (Steve Shaw, London Metropolitan University):

 

InSITU (Inclusive and Sustainable Infrastructure for Tourism and Urban Regeneration) research project is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) EPSRC and carried by London Metropolitan University, University of York and University of Salford.

InSITU was conducted as a 15-month scope study to support those who are working to improve public spaces and walking routes with the active participation of local communities, especially in areas of economic and social deprivation

a- The Importance of Neighbours for Older people:A New Book from CDF and Age Concern. Neighbouring and Older People an Enfolding Community?

Age Concern and The Community Development Foundation launched a new book that explores the importance of neighbours in the lives of older people. It looks at the impact of low levels of neighbouring and the potential for older people to be more involved in neighbourhood life.

b- New World Wildlife Funding-UK Report on World Bank Carbon Footprint:

 

 

WWF-UK launched a report on the World Bank and its carbon footprint, which reveals amongst other findings that the World Bank urgently needs to “decarbonise” its investment portfolio. WWF-UK shows that because of its continued funding of fossil fuel projects, the World Bank has in the last decade financed over 26 gigatonnes of CO2 emissions.

c- Capacity Global and The Environmental Law Foundation 'think piece' for DEFRA’s Third Sector Strategy:

 

DEFRA, as part of its Third Sector Strategy consultation process invited Capacity global and the Environmental Law Foundation to produce a paper on key consultation themes and to offer practical recommendations for ways to work more effectively with the third sector.

d- World Resources Institute: Report - Voice and Choice: Opening the Door to Environmental Democracy.

 

The report assesses the extent to which the world community is achieving the goals of Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration: access to environmental information, participation and justice. It is based on the work of The Access Initiative (TAI) and the analysis of over 200 case studies in 26 countries, the experiences of civil society organizations and governments worldwide.

b- Housing Minister Reveals Public Support for Government Eco-towns Vision:

 

Housing Minister Caroline Flint reveals that the second phase of Government eco-towns consultation shows that the support among the general public outnumbers opposition by a ratio of 5:1. The research is published as the consultation process around the Government's vision for the country's first eco-towns starts its next phase.

a- Communities and Local Government GLA – Communities Need More Power:

 

Communities Secretary Hazel Blears said recently that ‘people need more power to influence and control their local services.’

This came as new figures from the Citizenship survey (April 2007-March 2008) show that fewer than four in ten people feel their voices are being heard at local level.

b-DEFRA: Renewed Pledge to Wildlife Will Help Poorer Communities Worldwide:

 

Wildlife Minister Joan Ruddock recently announced that Wildlife projects across the globe are set to benefit from a commitment to funding for the next three years. Defra’s unique Darwin Initiative offers three year grants and UK expertise to champion wildlife conservation programmes in countries that are biodiversity rich but cash poor.

b-EPSRC and ESRC Research Funding Opportunity: 'Energy & Equity' and 'Sustainable Energy & Energy Security'.

 

EPSRC and ESRC are offering to support a number of interdisciplinary Research Clusters under two key research themes: 'Energy & Equity' and 'Sustainable Energy & Energy Security'.

 

Up to £2M is available for this call and it is expected that up to five clusters will be funded in total.
