a-Institute for Public Policy and Research - A fair Climate? Creating a Socially Just Response to Climate Change:

Aiming to shed some light on the potential synergies and conflicts between the government climate change and poverty reduction agendas, the Institute for Public Policy and Research through its Fair Climate programme of research work will make a timely and necessary intervention by considering how we can bring together and advance the twin objectives of responding to climate change and achieving greater social justice.

b-NESTA - New Programme for UK's Ageing Society:

NESTA previous research on the ageing population leads to believe the UK is unprepared for ageing. The programme found that just under a third of all pensioners live on or close to the poverty line. Amongst other findings the programme also reveal that half the UK workforce are not saving for the future.

NESTA's Public services innovation Lab is responding by launching a programme that will design innovative new approaches to create sustained personal well-being for an ageing society by working with people aged 50 years old.

3-Publication:

a-Economic and Social Research Council Report - Greening Existing Homes – A Herculean Task:

The Government should focus now on improving the energy efficiency of millions of buildings that will still be in use in 2050.

A new joint Economic and Social Research Council and Technology Strategy Board publication highlighting the 'misuse' of the buildings coincides with a report from the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee which calls on the government to make retrofitting existing buildings a priority in the Government's £535 million green stimulus plan.

b-Community Development Foundation - Duty to Involve: Making it Work:

The new duty to involve is the legal obligation to involve local people in decision making and it covers a large range of organisations.

The Community Development Foundation has produced a new guide to assist authorities in preparing for and implementing the new duty.'It is essential reading for anyone who wants to involve local people in a meaningful way that really helps the communities they work with.'

c-Institute for Public Policy and Research - Green Jobs:

The global recession brought worrying levels of unemployment to the UK and the need to look for new job opportunities is imperative. At the same time, the task of tackling climate change and drastically reduce emissions of greenhouse gases means that there is an opportunity to radically rethink of how the UK economy will be structured in the future.

This report compiles evidence from industry abroad and in the UK of the kind of interventions needed to deliver a successful offshore wind industry in Britain. It also argues that financial support and a new policy framework are required for the UK to reap the economic benefits of the 'energy revolution'.

d-DEMOS Pamphlet - Citizen Scientists:

As global challenges of sustainability, poverty, health and security grow more urgent, science and innovation need to be able to draw on diverse knowledge, diverse practices and diverse people.

At at time when private motivations for science are greater than those that are public, curiosity-driven, value-driven and needs-driven, scientists must reconnect their work and expertise with a wider role in society, to become 'Citizen Scientists'.

In this pamphlet, Jack Stillgoe argues that society needs to find, hear and support 'Citizen Scientists', presenting five European examples of individuals who helped science build its social conscience.
